Quilt Music Recap

In February we partnered with musician Dave Scanlon and quilter Emma Banay on their collaborative project, Quilt Music. We joined Dave and Emma at Rhizome DC, a local arts and music venue, to share our quilts, enjoy some hand sewing, and learn more about the project.

From the Rhizome website: "[Quilt Music] explores the commonalities between quilting & musicmusic & sculpture, and quilting & experimental arts. Scores/Instruction are created and then interpreted in both mediums. By focusing on theme & variation, wave length, rhythm, and form the scores/instructions lend themselves equally to both mediums. Such interdisciplinary work also highlights the temporal quality of music and the physicality of quilting."

Dave demo'd some of his experimental music with us, and Emma shared three of her quilts. It was lovely to spend time with them, and to share our art with each other!

Six DCMQG members participated in the collaboration and created quilts inspired by Dave's scores.

From top to bottom:
1. Dara T. made two quilts!
2. Frederick N.'s understated composition is a beautiful study in color.
3. Anne B. wrote a beautiful description of her quilt's inspiration, including the referential # block and the wavy quilting design.
4. Megan H.'s wonderful top includes improv flying geese and a bold use of print.
5. Alyson O's large quilt top grabbed everyone's attention with its cool highlighter colors!
