Maps and Photomosaics with Timna Tarr

We had a wonderful time on Saturday, June 29, learning the techniques to build Photomosaics with Timna Tarr!  We all started with the same photo and fabrics provided by Timna.  This allowed us to learn the techniques without having to make too many decisions.  What a fun time!  She brought a number of her photomosic quilts so that we could view them up close, including the rabbit, still in progress, so we could see how she marked the original photograph

This quilt is the first of Timna's Photomosaic quilts.

"The Hare Apparent" in progress.

Timna shows us how to put together the tiny squares that make a photomosaic quilt!

We all made a lot of progress on our mosaic flowers!

On Sunday, June 30, we learned Timna's map-making techniques and discovered that there are many, many different options for this process! Again Timna brought a number of amazing examples for us to view. We learned step by step how to make the decisions necessary to design our custom maps. Did you know that you can make roads with top-stitching, bias binding or just by leaving them blank? There's probably even a few methods that I am forgetting to mention!

Timna shows us her map of Holyoke, MA, based on the paper map on the right.

A colorful map example, depicting her neighborhood.

A more "simple" design - a mini quilt of Massachusetts.

Timna's quilt, Mississippi Meander, marks how the path of the Mississippi has changed over time.

Finally, we began tracing out our maps, choosing fabric and cutting! Some workshop participants got as far as fusing down their pieces. Check out some student work below!  We can't wait to see your finished maps.
