January 2020 Meeting Recap

We had a great first meeting of the year at the Georgetown Public Library on Saturday, January 11. Below are some highlights from Show & Tell and the 2019 Third Thursday Block Challenge. Scroll down to see pictures (my apologies to anyone whose work I failed to photograph!).

Lynne shared two beautiful finishes: one is her DCMQG Bee quilt (longarm quilting by our member Cindy Luby) and the other is a mini that shows an island in the Chesapeake where she used to take her students on field trips. The island has shrunken drastically in the last few decades, as Lynne portrayed in her quilt, which is heading to QuiltCon(!).

Robin shared another gorgeous Texas star quilt -- the star is vintage, but Robin fixed it up and added the background fabric. The impressive hand quilting was done by Amish quilters.

Then Dara showed this colorful beauty she started years ago. Hooray for finishing up longtime WIPs! She also shared a mini she made for the Social Justice Sewing Academy that she is currently hand quilting.

Carolyn G. has been productive! She showed three quilts: two for charity (those kittens!) and one for a friend's baby. Friends have been writing sweet notes in the quote bubbles -- what a thoughtful gift!

New member Nichole showed a beautiful tree skirt made from Liberty prints.

Hannah brought her Me+You Indah Batik Fabric Challenge mini for QuiltCon. This definitely looks like a Hannah quilt, with the clean lines and brilliant use of geometry.

Stephanie showed us her version of Cluck Cluck Sew's Shimmer quilt. Stephanie modified the pattern slightly and added sashing, with smashing results!

Jennifer brought a gorgeous recent finish (apologies for forgetting the pattern name). The white stars and other secondary patterns pop against that mix of dark cool colors.

After Show & Tell we enjoyed seeing several members' Third Thursday blocks from 2019. These blocks were part of a monthly challenge our guild created to make use of the MQG's Blocks of the Month. Every month participants were eligible to be included in a prize drawing. It's so much fun to see how differently each participant approached theirs. I look forward to seeing some awesome sampler quilts made from these blocks!

Lynne made each of her blocks into a quilt!

Ann L. went for stark contrast with black on scraps.

Hannah chose a mostly cool palette with striped accents from
Anna Maria Horner's Loominous collection.

Dara went with a bright and cheerful look.

Eleanor made a striking Branch block. One is better than none!

The grand prize winner got to take home a bundle of new Essex linen from TINT Makerspace and a gift certificate for longarm quilting from Cindy Luby. And the winner is...

...Dara!

Well deserved, Dara! Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated. We look forward to seeing you again on February 8 at our meeting at TINT.
