Gee's Bend Inspiration

We interrupt our regularly scheduled "Friday Flickr Favorites" to bring you inspiration of a different type!

Elle, Loretta, Melinda, and Frederick
Frederick, Melinda, Leah, Katie, Helen, Helen's friend Lisa, and Tanesha (and me, of course!) all attended a talk this morning at the law firm Patton Boggs, where we learned more about and met 2 of the Gee's Bend quilters, Loretta Pettway Bennett (L) and Mary Lee Bendolph (R).  We watched multiple interesting video presentations, heard Mary Lee Bendolph sing, and perhaps best of all, we got to see and touch the quilts!

This denim and red quilt was my favorite - it was really soft, and the use of the seams was so clever.

Loretta was working on this one when we arrived.

This one is a clever use of prairie points, and Loretta put together a pattern if you'd like to make one.

After the talk, Frederick, Melinda, Helen, Lisa, and I went out to lunch to continue to talk quilting and build community - a very fun day!  Also, I have to report that Leah's son, almost 4 months old, is an absolute doll, and she's managed to make 7 quilts since he was born.  I'm totally inspired (and hope my baby sleeps as well as hers does!).

Have a fabulous weekend,
Elle
