Paper piecing & Improv with Amy Friend

On April 27 & 28, we welcomed Amy Friend to the DC metro area at the Hampton Inn - NOMA for two wonderful workshops and a trunk show.

In the first workshop we learned Intentional Piecing techniques using the Crazy Eights pattern from Amy's book by the same name. We used lightboxes (provided by the Daylight Company to perfectly line up our stripes.  Even for the experienced paper piecer, there was a lot to learn to get those striped *just* right!

Amy provided several potential layout options for the completed blocks so participants could see shapes created in the negative space.

Participant's completed blocks - who knew there were so many options for stripes!

Later that evening, Amy presented her trunk show defining alternate gridwork and negative space, two principles of modern quilting. She shared quilts that show how she has played with these two ideas in different ways over the last few years—from just a touch to bold. So many, many favorites were shown!

On Sunday, we delved into the world of creating our own improvisational paper pieced patterns and played with the ideas discussed in the lecture on Saturday night - negative space and alternate gridwork, as well as rotation and mirroring.  Participants created blocks and started to plan quilts that were all very different based on their individual tastes:

Thanks for coming to DC, Amy!
